Getting Started with the Development Map – Helpful Hints

June 1, 2016

Thank you for signing up to use the Development map with your children. I am hoping the following bits and pieces will be helpful as you start to use the Development Map

  • The Philosophy of the Development Map film sets the pedagogical context of the Development Map and the principles behind it; there are also some helpful words from Michelle the EYP at Clockwork Day Nursery
  • Have a look at the Good Practice Guide - Getting Started with the Development Map which is in the Library and Resources section. There are some helpful tips on page 3
  • The DM Quick Guide and Aide Memoir are there as a tools to support day to day practice. You may want to have some handy copies
  • As you work through the Development Map look out for the information symbol on the pages (usually top right of the page); this will give you a quick access to the guide
  • In the Invitational Period you could try adding previous progress summaries for your children into the Development Map as this will show you the ‘bigger picture’ of the child’s development over a longer period of time
  • The Reviews (Child, Parent, Cohort and Quality) are informed by the information you have entered for your children. During the Invitational Period you may not have generated enough reviews to create detailed analysis as this builds over time. Getting Started with the Development Map: The Good Practice Guide explains how the Reviews work in practice. Have a play with it though and see what you can do!
  • We will be adding an end of Foundation Stage Summary Review and Export Data tool. The purpose of this review is to analyse your data from the 3 ELGS and compare this to the National Averages

Helpful Tips from Michelle at Clockwork are

  • When first starting with the DM take your time to access all the different functions to become familiar with it
  • When beginning to input a child’s progress point I have found it useful to have the child’s learning journey and EYFS close to hand, so I can keep referring to it
  • Explore and make the most of the reporting tool and Age Related Expectations (ARE) they are  helpful in providing next steps and further planning
